5 Summer Plumbing Maintenance Tips

May 11, 2023

With rising temperatures, we often think about how it will impact our air conditioning, the status of our thermostat and the energy bill. However, we tend to ignore the toll that summer time can have on plumbing. From showers to garbage disposals to toilets, the last thing you want this season is to have to call a plumber to fix any of these items. Here are five tips and tricks to prevent a summer plumbing disaster.

1.Watch what food you put down your disposal

This applies year-round, but many summer food trends include stringy and fibrous fruits and vegetables that can clog up your disposal. This includes corn husks and cobs, celery, artichokes and banana peels. These are things that you should never send down the disposal!

2.Hose off any big messes outside

Our pipes were not built to withstand large amounts of sand, dirt and gravel. Try to hose off yourself (and your dog) before going inside if you have a noticible amount on you after a day at the beach or in the garden. This will prevent your pipes from clogging up while you take your refreshing shower or wash your clothing.

3.Walk through toilet etiquette with your kids

Summer means the kids are home from school and adds to the stress on your toilets. Walk through proper etiquette with your kids on the appropriate amount of toilet paper to use and what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet (no toys!).

4.Replace your sprinkler head

Your grass requires extra water in the summer due to the heat and weather conditions. In addition, sprinklers prove as a fun, summer cool down option for the kids to run through. This means extra work for your sprinklers and a perfect time to replace the sprinkler head.

5.Brush your pet frequently

With higher temperatures, our pets tend to shed more hair than usual. This gets on our clothing, ends up in our washing machine or ends up in our tub. Too much hair can clog up the drains. Avoid this by brushing your pet frequently, keeping the hair off you and your pipes.
