Four Things to Avoid Putting Down the Garbage Disposal This Thanksgiving

May 11, 2023

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means turkey, casseroles, and pies galore! With the extravagant feast comes the inevitable clean-up, and it’s important to know what you can and can’t put down your garbage disposal to ensure that a plumbing disaster won’t wreck the festivities. On this week’s blog, the experts at Yes! Air Conditioning & Plumbing have identified popular menu items that should steer clear of the garbage disposal this Thanksgiving.

Turkey

This essential Thanksgiving staple can wreak havoc on your garbage disposal! The cooled oil, grease and fat from the turkey will solidify in your drain, causing it to become clogged and odorous. Turkey bones (or bones of any kind) are also hazardous to the mechanics of a garbage disposal, and could cause the blades to become damaged and the motor to burn out if processed.

Mashed Potatoes

Back away from the sink when peeling potatoes! The starchy, fibrous peels can wrap around the blades of your garbage disposal, which could lead to a jam, clog or even permanent damage. It’s best to stay on the safe side and peel your potatoes over a trash can or bowl instead.

Eggshells

Whether preparing your famous pie crust or whipping up a batch deviled eggs, steer clear of putting any eggshells down the garbage disposal.  Though they seem fragile and harmless, an eggshell’s membrane lining can stick to the sides of the disposal and attach themselves to other drain-safe items, causing a clog to form.

Stuffing

Where there is stuffing, there are usually small pieces of celery as well. Celery is one of the top culprits of garbage disposal issues due to its very fibrous strands. These strands can wrap around the blades of the disposal, causing it to become jammed.
